Strengthening health systems through WASH improvements

MENTOR is supporting District Health Services to strengthen health systems in northern Mozambique by implementing the WASH Facility Improvement Tool (WASHFIT) in 15 health facilities.

Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are critical to quality healthcare. In partnership with UNICEF Moçambique, we are working together with facility teams in Cabo Delgado and Nampula Provinces to:

– Carry out participatory WASH assessments
– Develop actionable improvement plans
– Increase skills through training and mentoring
– Encourage ownership of sustainable WASH practices.

James Mungai, MENTOR Technical Coordinator, said: “These efforts are not just about infrastructure – they are about empowering health workers, protecting patients, and strengthening infection prevention and control.

“One of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing facility staff take the lead in driving change, from reorganising waste zones to ensuring consistent hand hygiene practices.

“We are excited to continue supporting WASHFIT as a practical, scalable tool to improve health facility environments and outcomes.”
