Giles is a consultant in Emergency Medicine at Princess Royal University Hospital, King’s College Hospital NHS Trust.
He studied medicine at Oxford and trained as a specialist in Emergency Medicine (EM) in Wales. While a trainee, he served 10 years in the Army Reserve and obtained diplomas in prehospital care and the medical care of catastrophes. He then worked in academic emergency medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he remains honorary associate professor. He is involved in trauma training projects in several SE Asian countries.
From 2015 to 2017 he worked in Kigali where he directed the new emergency training programme and is now honorary associate professor at the University of Rwanda. On his return to London, he founded the Global EM committee at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
Giles is the founding chair of the European Society of EM (EuSEM) Working-group on Global Emergency Medicine. He has taught global emergency medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and at Queen Mary University London where he is honorary senior lecturer. Giles holds degrees in physiology, ethics of healthcare, and theology. He lives in London with his wife and children and is a keen cruciverbalist.
