Improved sanitation and hygiene in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique

In Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique more than 800,000 people have fled their homes because of armed conflict affecting this region since 2017. Much public infrastructure, including schools, was destroyed during the conflict. The lack of adequate sanitation increases the risk of diarrhoeal diseases amongst children from these internally displaced communities.

To improve water, hygiene and sanitation in schools and prevent the diseases that lead to high absenteeism, MENTOR is rehabilitating and building boreholes, rainwater harvesting systems and latrines with hygiene promotion in 53 schools in four districts of the province.

At the end of the programme:
🚧 13 schools will have new or rehabilitated boreholes
💦 15 schools will have rainwater storage systems
🚽 18 schools will have new or rehabilitated latrines
💧 more than 55,000 people will benefit from this programme.

MENTOR is delivering WASH activities as part of a consortium with Save the Children, Humanity & Inclusion and Associacao Progresso, funded by European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO). The programme: ‘Increased access and retention to safe, protective, quality, and inclusive learning environments for children in Cabo Delgado’ started in June 2022.
