World NTD Day 2026

In 2025 MENTOR programme teams supported the delivery of essential treatments and vector control, and helped strengthen health systems, to address the high risk of neglected tropical diseases in South Sudan, Syria and Angola.

They overcame significant challenges to reach communities cut off by flooding, affected by conflict, far from health services, or displaced, to treat and protect people from schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, leishmaniasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

Highlights from last year include:

·      A mass drug administration campaign in Angola delivered 1,403,016 treatments for schistosomiasis and 623,579 treatments for soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

·      A mass drug administration campaign in 10 counties in South Sudan treated 1,671,679 people for onchocerciasis and 948,994 people for lymphatic filariasis.

·      In Syria, 11,884 leishmaniasis cases were diagnosed and treated, and 195,000 follow up consultations took place.

·      144,628 households in Syria were sprayed to reduce the sandfly population, protecting 799,428 people from the risk of leishmaniasis.

Working in partnership with local health authorities, communities and donors, the team were committed and dedicated to reducing the suffering and harm caused by neglected tropical diseases.
