A cholera outbreak was declared in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado Province last week. This outbreak follows the other affected provinces of Niassa, Zambezia, Tete, Manica, Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza and the neighbouring country of Malawi – experiencing the deadliest cholera epidemic in decades with more than 1,200 deaths.
MENTOR is co-ordinating the cholera response with the Provincial Health Directorate and other Health Cluster Partners. MENTOR is providing:
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Tanks, water and soap
- Cholera prevention and hygiene promotion activities through community activists.
Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease, is caused by a bacterial infection mainly linked to inadequate sanitation and insufficient access to safe drinking water. Unfortunately, it can kill within hours if left untreated.
